Alice Design Communication is an award-winning graphic design studio. We take a singular approach to every print- and web-based challenge in order to craft specific solutions that engage specific audiences in new and compelling ways.

We enjoy working with great clients to simplify and amplify the core idea of a product, service, catalog, event, space or identity. Our visualization of that idea never uses arbitrary applications of style. We take pride in making each project unique to the message.

Bring us your big ideas. Brainstorm with us. We're not finished until we discover signature graphic design that connects with the heart and soul of your audience. After all, your success is our success.

margo halverson’s love of words together with the narrative power of the photographic image led her to the world of typography and graphic design. She received her BFA and MFA in photography from Arizona State University where post-grad she studied graphic design with Rob Roy Kelly. Margo was sole proprietor/designer of Halverson Design from 1983–1998; she has taught graphic design at Arizona State University; was an art director for Morgan & Company, Phoenix, AZ; and a designer at IBM, Boca Raton, FL prior to moving to Portland, Maine. She is co-founder of DesignInquiry and a Professor of Graphic Design at Maine College of Art. She grew up in North Dakota and after moving to the east from Arizona, she still misses living in grids.

charles melcher studied graphic design at Yale University School of Art to broaden and amplify his experience making ideas come to life in visual form. His first professional connection to communication comes from his experience teaching creative writing since 1991 while he exhibited his photography nationally and internationally. He is currently Associate Professor at Maine College of Art where he has been chair of the graphic design department. He received his BFA in photography from Massachusetts College of Art, his MFA in graphic design from Yale. Charles continues to do commercial and personal photography, teach writing, and together with Margo raise Jack and Cora, now astoundingly busy and independent kids who mostly need chauffeurs and cooks.

We often work with type designer and Maine College of Art colleague mark jamra of TypeCulture on our identity projects. Mark brings a mastery of type design to logos and wordmarks that are hand-crafted to specific solutions and resonate with each brand's personality. He is the designer of the internationally known typefaces such as Alphatier™, Expo Sans™, Expo Serif™, Jamille™, Kinesis®, Latienne™, and Tacitus™. greg jalbert broke into marketing by promoting his fishing and hunting lodge on the Allagash River. He moved on to write catalogs for L.L. Bean, and then to brand and write award-winning marketing material for businesses throughout the United States, Canada, Central America and the Caribbean. Just like tales around the campfire, great copy stirs the imagination.

In re-branding, conceptualizing and designing our company's promotional catalog, Margo and Charles brought considerable talent to the process. Throughout the project we maintained a collegial and inspiring exchange of ideas as they created design options and refined the best solutions. Their willingness to listen and incorporate my thoughts about our company and its competitive edge led a successful and rewarding campaign.
—David Kaufman, President, Brahms Mount

Margo and Charles, I like your work in the faculty show. As I viewed the catalogs and posters, I was struck by their freshness, brilliance and clarity. Each book page was a discovery. I hope the students notice how your work goes beyond subject matter, while taking subject into account. You more than prove that Graphic Design isn't to obfuscate but to reveal.
—John Ventigmelia, Sculptor, Professor, Maine College of Art

I have never seen a more powerful cover with a Morgan image. Kudos to the designer!
